Learn how to find, install, activate, preview, and manage
WordPress themes using the dashboard and a downloaded theme ZIP file.
Learning Objective:
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to install a theme
from the WordPress theme directory, upload a ZIP file, activate
a theme, and troubleshoot common installation problems.
1. What Does Installing a Theme Mean?
Installing a theme adds its files to your WordPress website.
The theme is not necessarily used by your website until you
activate it.
Install vs Activate
Install: Adds the theme to your website.
Activate: Makes the theme the active
theme controlling your site's appearance.
2. Before Installing a Theme
Before choosing a theme, check the following:
Choose a theme that suits your website's purpose.
Check compatibility with your WordPress version.
Review the theme's features and documentation.
Check whether the theme is maintained and updated.
Download themes from trusted sources.
Back up an existing website before making major changes.
Security tip:
Avoid unofficial or pirated theme ZIP files. They may contain
malicious code or create security problems.
3. Method 1: Install a Theme from the WordPress Directory
This is one of the easiest methods for beginners. You can
browse themes from inside the WordPress dashboard.
Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
Open Appearance → Themes.
Click Add New Theme or the equivalent option.
Browse the available themes or search by name.
Review the theme details.
Click Install for your chosen theme.
Wait for the installation to finish.
Click Activate if you want to use it.
Example: Install a Theme
Website: Soopro Pathshala
Goal: Find a theme suitable for an education website.
Steps: Search for a suitable theme, inspect its features, install it, and activate it on a test site.
After activation, open the website and check its
appearance on desktop and mobile.
4. Method 2: Upload a Theme ZIP File
You can upload a theme ZIP file if you obtained a theme from
a trusted developer or marketplace.
Download the theme ZIP file from its official source.
Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
Open Appearance → Themes.
Click Add New Theme.
Choose Upload Theme.
Select the theme ZIP file from your computer.
Click Install Now.
Wait for WordPress to complete the installation.
Click Activate if you want to use the theme.
Important ZIP File Tip
Some theme downloads contain a ZIP file with documentation,
licensing information, and another theme ZIP file inside.
If WordPress reports that the theme is missing its
stylesheet or is invalid, check whether you selected
the actual installable theme ZIP file.
5. Method 3: Install a Theme Manually
Advanced users can install a theme by uploading its extracted
theme folder to the WordPress themes directory using a file
manager or SFTP.
WordPress themes are normally located in:
wp-content/themes/
Download the theme from a trusted source.
Extract the theme files if they are packaged in a ZIP archive.
Identify the actual theme folder.
Upload that folder to wp-content/themes/.
Open Appearance → Themes in WordPress.
Find the newly uploaded theme.
Activate it if you want to use it.
Note:
Make sure the folder structure is correct. The theme's
style.css file should be inside the theme folder,
not buried in an unintended extra directory.
6. How to Preview a Theme
Previewing a theme lets you inspect its appearance before
making it active, where preview functionality is available.
Open Appearance → Themes.
Select the theme you want to inspect.
Use the available preview option.
Check layouts, colors, typography, and navigation.
Activate the theme only after reviewing it.
A preview may not perfectly represent the final website.
Menus, widgets, templates, and theme settings may need
adjustment after activation.
7. How to Activate a Theme
Activating a theme makes it the active theme for your website.
Open Appearance → Themes.
Find the installed theme.
Click Activate.
Open your website in a new browser tab.
Check the homepage, posts, pages, menus, and footer.
After Activation Checklist
Check the homepage layout.
Verify the navigation menu.
Review header and footer content.
Check important images and pages.
Test contact forms and essential features.
Check mobile responsiveness.
8. How to Switch Back to a Previous Theme
If a newly activated theme does not work as expected, you can
usually reactivate a previously installed theme.
Open Appearance → Themes.
Find the previous theme.
Click Activate.
Check the website again.
Switching back may restore the previous design, but it might
not automatically restore all menu assignments, widgets,
theme settings, or content layouts. Check these after switching.
9. How to Delete an Unused Theme
WordPress lets you remove installed themes that are not needed.
Keep your active theme and any parent theme required by an
active child theme.
Open Appearance → Themes.
Select the theme you want to remove.
Make sure it is not the active theme.
Use the Delete option if available.
Confirm deletion.
Keeping unused themes to a minimum can simplify maintenance.
Retain any theme needed for recovery or your child-theme setup.
10. Common Theme Installation Problems
