publish, and manage blog posts in WordPress.
Learning Objective:
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a post,
format its content, add a featured image, save a draft, and
publish or update a post.
1. What Is a WordPress Post?
A post is used to publish articles, news, announcements,
tutorials, and other regularly updated content on a website.
Posts usually appear in reverse chronological order, with
newer posts displayed before older posts.
Examples of posts:
How to Learn HTML
Top 10 Computer Courses
Latest Education News
Tips for Learning Programming

Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
Open Posts from the left sidebar.
Click Add New Post.
Enter a title for your post.
Add your text, images, headings, and other content.
Choose a category and add relevant tags.
Set a featured image if required.

Publish the post when it is ready.
Example Post
Title: Introduction to HTML
Content: HTML stands for HyperText
Markup Language. It is used to create the structure
of web pages.
Category: Web Development
Tags: HTML, Web Design, Beginners
3. Understanding the WordPress Post Editor
WordPress uses a block-based editor, commonly called the
Gutenberg editor. Each piece of content is added as a block.
Block
Purpose
Paragraph
Add normal text to a post.
Heading
Create headings and subheadings.
Image
Insert an image into the content.
List
Create ordered or unordered lists.
Quote
Highlight a quotation.
Video
Embed or display supported video content.
Buttons
Add clickable buttons or calls to action.
4. How to Add Content Blocks
Open a new or existing post.
Click the plus (+) button in the editor.
Search for the block you need, such as Paragraph or Image.
Select the block and enter or insert your content.
Repeat to add more blocks.
You can rearrange blocks and use the toolbar or block settings
to change formatting and layout.
5. Save a Post as a Draft
A draft is a post that has been saved but is not yet published
for public viewing.
Use a draft when:
You want to finish writing later.
You need someone to review the content.
You want to check images and formatting before publishing.
In the editor, use the available save option to save your
unpublished work as a draft.
6. Preview a Post
Preview lets you check how a post may appear on your website
before publishing it.
Before publishing, check:
Title and spelling
Paragraph spacing and headings
Images and links
Desktop and mobile appearance
Whether the content is complete
7. Publish a Post
Publishing makes a post available according to its visibility
and publication settings.
Finish writing your content.
Check the post settings.
Click Publish.
Review the publishing confirmation.
Visit the post on your website to verify it.
Important:
Review your post before publishing. Check its content, links,
images, visibility, and publication date.
8. Schedule a Post
WordPress allows you to schedule a post for a future date and
time. This is useful when you prepare articles in advance.
Open the post editor.
Find the publication date and time settings.
Select a future date and time.
Use the scheduling or publishing option shown by WordPress.
Confirm that the post is scheduled.
9. Edit an Existing Post
To edit a post that already exists:
Go to Posts → All Posts.
Find the post you want to change.
Click its title or choose Edit.
Make the required changes.
Click Update to save the changes.
Editing a published post changes its existing content. You
usually do not need to create a new post just to correct a
spelling mistake or update information.
10. Add a Featured Image
A featured image is the main image associated with a post.
Depending on your theme, it may appear on the blog page,
archive pages, and at the top of the post.
Open the post editor.
Find the Featured Image setting in the post settings.
Choose an existing image or upload a new one.
Select the image and confirm your choice.
Preview the post to check how it appears.
11. Add an Excerpt
An excerpt is a short summary of a post. Themes may display it
on blog listings, archive pages, or other post previews.
For example, an excerpt for a post titled
Introduction to HTML could be:
Learn the basics of HTML, including elements, headings,
paragraphs, links, and images.
12. Understand the Post URL (Permalink)
A permalink is the URL used to access a post. For example:
https://example.com/introduction-to-html/
Use a short, descriptive URL where possible. A clear permalink
helps visitors understand the topic of the page.
13. Difference Between Draft, Published, and Scheduled
Status
Meaning
Draft
Saved but not yet published.
Published
Published and available according to visibility settings.
Scheduled
Set to publish automatically at a future date and time.
Pending Review
Waiting for review or approval, depending on the user's role and workflow.
14. Practical Assignment

Create a new post titled "My First WordPress Post".
Write two paragraphs about yourself or your institute.
Add one heading and one list.
Insert an image into the post.
Choose a category and add two relevant tags.
