Paragraph Text in Photoshop

Paragraph Text is used when you need to add longer text inside a defined text area. Instead of creating text with a single click, you drag the Type Tool to create a text box. Photoshop then automatically wraps the text inside that area.

Note: Paragraph Text is useful for descriptions, articles, course information, advertisements, brochures and other designs containing multiple lines of text.

1. What is Paragraph Text?

Paragraph Text is text created inside a defined rectangular text area.

The text automatically moves to the next line when it reaches the edge of the text box.

2. Why Use Paragraph Text?

Paragraph Text is useful when a design contains more than a few words.

  • Descriptions
  • Course details
  • Advertisements
  • Brochures
  • Instructions
  • Long captions

3. Selecting the Type Tool

Select the Type Tool from the Photoshop Toolbar.

You can also press the keyboard shortcut:

T

4. Creating a Paragraph Text Box

Select the Type Tool and click and drag on the canvas.

Click + Drag
      ↓
Create Text Box
      ↓
Type Paragraph

The rectangle you create determines the area in which the text will flow.

5. Automatic Text Wrapping

One of the main features of Paragraph Text is automatic wrapping.

When the text reaches the right edge of the text box, Photoshop automatically moves the next words to another line.

6. Text Box Width

The width of the text box controls how much text can appear on each line.

A narrow box creates shorter lines, while a wider box allows longer lines.

7. Text Box Height

The height of the text box determines the available vertical space for the paragraph.

Make the text box large enough to accommodate the required content.

8. Editing Paragraph Text

To edit paragraph text, select the Type Tool and click inside the text.

You can add, remove or change words while keeping the paragraph inside its text box.

9. Resizing the Text Box

You can change the size of a paragraph text box to control the available text area.

A wider box can reduce the number of lines, while a narrower box can create more lines.

10. Changing Font

Paragraph Text can use different fonts just like other text layers.

Choose a readable font that matches the purpose of your design.

  • Arial
  • Calibri
  • Verdana
  • Georgia

11. Changing Font Size

Font size controls how large the paragraph text appears.

For long paragraphs, choose a size that is comfortable to read at the final display size.

12. Changing Paragraph Color

You can select the paragraph text and change its color.

Make sure there is enough contrast between the text and the background.

13. Paragraph Alignment

Paragraph Text supports different alignment options.

  • Left Align
  • Center Align
  • Right Align
  • Justified alignment options

14. Left-Aligned Paragraph

Left alignment is commonly used for normal paragraphs because it provides a familiar reading pattern.

It is suitable for descriptions, instructions and course information.

15. Center-Aligned Paragraph

Center alignment places each line around the center of the text area.

It can be useful for short promotional content, invitations and special layouts.

16. Right-Aligned Paragraph

Right alignment places the paragraph toward the right side of the text area.

It can be used for specific design layouts and decorative compositions.

17. Justified Paragraph Text

Justification adjusts spacing between words so that text lines can align along both sides of the text area.

It can be useful in some publication-style layouts.

18. Leading in Paragraph Text

Leading controls the vertical space between lines.

Proper leading improves readability and prevents paragraphs from looking too crowded.

Line One
        ↕
Line Two
        ↕
Line Three

19. Tracking in Paragraph Text

Tracking changes the overall spacing between characters.

Use moderate tracking for normal paragraphs so that the text remains easy to read.

20. Paragraph Panel

The Paragraph panel provides controls for paragraph formatting.

It can be used for settings such as:

  • Text alignment
  • Indentation
  • Spacing
  • Paragraph direction
  • Justification

21. Paragraph Text for Course Information

Paragraph Text is useful for displaying course descriptions.

practice exercises and projects.

The text box keeps the information organized inside the design.

22. Paragraph Text for Advertisements

Advertisements often contain a short description below the main heading.

Paragraph Text makes it easier to control the width and position of this information.

23. Paragraph Text for Brochures

Brochures can contain multiple paragraphs describing services, products or organizations.

Using text boxes allows each section to have a controlled width and consistent layout.

24. Paragraph Text and Layer Styles

Paragraph Text can also use Layer Styles.

  • Drop Shadow
  • Stroke
  • Outer Glow
  • Color Overlay

Use effects carefully because excessive effects can reduce readability.

25. Paragraph Text vs Point Text

Remember the basic difference:

Point Text
→ Click once
→ Useful for short text
→ Text expands as you type

Paragraph Text
→ Click and drag
→ Creates a text box
→ Text wraps inside the box

26. Common Mistakes

  • Making the text box too narrow
  • Using very small font sizes
  • Poor contrast with the background
  • Using excessive line spacing
  • Using too many decorative fonts
  • Overcrowding the text area
  • Ignoring the final display size
