Color Balance in Photoshop

Color Balance is a Photoshop adjustment used to change the relationship between different colors in an image. It is useful for correcting unwanted color casts, improving photographs and creating creative color effects.

Note: Color Balance allows you to adjust colors separately in Shadows, Midtones and Highlights.

1. What is Color Balance?

Color Balance is an adjustment that lets you control the color relationships within an image.

It can be used to correct an unwanted color cast or create a particular color mood.

2. Why Use Color Balance?

Photographs can sometimes have an unwanted color tint because of lighting conditions or camera settings.

Color Balance can help make the colors appear more natural.

  • Correct color casts
  • Improve photographs
  • Create warm colors
  • Create cool colors
  • Create creative color effects

3. Opening Color Balance

Color Balance can be opened from the Image menu.

Image → Adjustments → Color Balance

You can also use a Color Balance Adjustment Layer for flexible editing.

4. Color Balance Dialog

The Color Balance controls provide color sliders that allow you to shift the color relationship of an image.

The main color pairs include:

  • Cyan ↔ Red
  • Magenta ↔ Green
  • Yellow ↔ Blue

5. Cyan and Red

The first color pair controls the relationship between Cyan and Red.

Cyan ←────────→ Red

Moving the control toward one side increases the influence of that color relationship.

6. Magenta and Green

The second color pair controls the relationship between Magenta and Green.

Magenta ←────────→ Green

This control can help correct or create a magenta or green color cast.

7. Yellow and Blue

The third color pair controls the relationship between Yellow and Blue.

Yellow ←────────→ Blue

This is useful for controlling warm yellow tones and cool blue tones.

8. Shadows Option

The Shadows option allows you to target darker areas of an image.

This is useful when the unwanted color cast is mainly visible in the darker areas.

9. Midtones Option

The Midtones option targets the middle brightness range of the image.

Midtones often contain important visible details, so use small adjustments when editing them.

10. Highlights Option

The Highlights option targets brighter areas of an image.

It can be useful for controlling color in bright areas such as skies, lights and bright surfaces.

11. Shadows, Midtones and Highlights

Color Balance separates the image into three main tonal areas.

Shadows

Dark Areas

Midtones
   ↓
Middle Brightness

Highlights
   ↓
Bright Areas

This gives you more control than applying one color adjustment to the entire image.

12. Preserve Luminosity

The Preserve Luminosity option is designed to help maintain the overall brightness relationship of the image while adjusting color balance.

This can help prevent unwanted changes in overall brightness during color correction.

13. Warm Color Effect

Warm colors such as yellow, orange and red can create a warm visual mood.

Warm color grading is often used for sunset and lifestyle photographs.

14. Cool Color Effect

Blue and cyan tones can create a cooler visual appearance.

Cool color effects can be useful for night scenes and modern creative designs.

15. Correcting a Color Cast

A color cast occurs when an image has an unwanted overall tint.

For example, an indoor photograph may appear too yellow. Color Balance can be used carefully to reduce the unwanted cast.

16. Correcting a Cool Image

If an image appears excessively blue or cyan, Color Balance can be used to make a controlled shift toward warmer color relationships.

Always compare the edited result with the original photograph.

17. Color Balance for Portraits

Color Balance can be used to improve the overall color appearance of portraits.

Make very small changes because excessive color adjustments can make skin tones look unnatural.

18. Color Balance for Landscape Photos

Landscape photographs can benefit from subtle color grading.

For example, you can create a warmer sunset mood or a cooler evening appearance.

19. Color Balance for Product Photos

Product photos should usually preserve the product's real color.

Use Color Balance carefully to correct lighting-related color casts without changing the product's identity.

20. Color Balance for Posters

Color Balance can help make photographs match the color theme of a poster.

A consistent color mood can make a promotional design look more professional.

21. Color Balance Adjustment Layer

A Color Balance Adjustment Layer allows you to modify colors without directly changing the original image pixels.

22. Color Balance with Layer Masks

A layer mask can control where the Color Balance adjustment is visible.

This is useful when you want to color-correct only one part of an image.

  2. Select Midtones.
